Law Enforcement Chaplaincy-Sacramento (LEC-S) began in 1977 to provide pastoral care to the employees of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department. Since that time, the vision and the mission of the Chaplaincy has grown to serve 14 law enforcement agencies, including federal, state and local departments, as well as citizens within the entire Sacramento area. All Chaplaincy services are provided at no cost to the individuals, families or departments because of the generous contributions made by officers and citizens in the community who give to support this mission. There are two full time paid staff Chaplains and a cadre of nearly 100 volunteer Chaplains. Today, LEC-S is considered a model Chaplaincy program for the nation due to the complementary way it integrates the focus of service to both law enforcement personnel and community crime victims. Chaplains are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as first responders alongside peace officers. Chaplains go to homes, hospitals, corporate business offices, schools, and city or county government facilities, fully prepared to give support to those people who have had crimes committed against them, and who have tragically suffered the loss of family or friends. Through many years of non-sectarian service to Sacramento, LEC-s Chaplains have demonstrated compassion in action and a calming presence on scene. Law Enforcement Commanders, community leaders, administrators, and corporate executives trust the integrity of this program to consistently provide the highest level of service to their departments, neighborhoods, schools and workforce. Chaplains are respectful of every religious, ethnic and cultural distinction or perspective. Chaplains provide a spiritual-care presence on scene where they offer practical guidance and compassion to those who permit them to be present. Officers often testify, “Everyone’s stress level drops when the Chaplains arrive.” |
